The Local Pantry launches Afternoon Tea

Everything stops for tea’, go the famous song lyrics from the old movie ‘Come out of the Pantry’ starring Jack Buchanan. Now you can ‘stop’ for tea at The Local Pantry near Pool as it launches ‘Afternoon Tea’ in time to celebrate Mother’s Day on Sunday 30 March.

The great British tradition of afternoon tea has been associated with celebrations and special occasions since it was introduced in the early 19th Century and Chef Rob is creating a delicious afternoon treat, for one or more, with a selection of locally sourced delights to tantalise the taste buds.

The tea includes a selection of sandwiches using favourite Yorkshire fillings, savoury pastry bites and smoked salmon canapés, homemade  scone with Stamfrey Organic clotted cream and Bracken Hill jam and a mini Local Pantry cake selection. The occasion can be enjoyed with a pot of Mad Hatter Yorkshire Tea or a speciality tea and for those wanting to celebrate in style a glass of bubbly can be enjoyed.

Owner Suzannah Hepworth comments:-

“The introduction of afternoon tea is in response to the many requests we have received from customers. Those who regularly join us for brunch or lunch have suggested we introduce afternoon tea for when they wanted to push the boat out and celebrate in style. We really feel that Mother’s Day is such an occasion and that afternoon tea is the perfect gift experience. It is a great opportunity for Chef Rob to show off his skills and create a truly ‘Yorkshire’ treat.”

Suzannah continues: “We really enjoy the lyrics of the song written by Al Good heart and Al Hoffman in 1935, about how the English stop for tea.  ‘It is a very good English custom and a stimulant for the brain, when you feel a little weary a cup’ll make you cheery and it’s cheaper than champagne.’ How fitting that the movie is named ‘Come out of the Pantry.’

The Local Pantry afternoon tea is a far cry from the simple pot of tea and a light snack that Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford, enjoyed privately in her boudoir. She is credited with creating the occasion of afternoon tea, after she complained of "having that sinking feeling" during the afternoon. At the time people ate just two main meals a day, breakfast, and dinner late in the evening. Later friends were invited to join her in her private rooms at Woburn Abbey and when in London, the Duchess would send cards to friends asking them to join her for "tea and a walking the fields." Other ladies of society were quick to copy the idea and afternoon tea was born and moved into the drawing room.

If you want to give your Mum a day to remember, the Local Pantry is taking bookings for afternoon tea between 2pm and 5pm on Sunday 30th March.  All those that book and mention the article at the time of booking will receive a complimentary seasonal flower posy  for their mums to celebrate the launch, please call 0113 203 7361 - where a member of the team will be happy to take your booking.  Tea for one is £14.95, tea for two £28 and to include a glass of bubbly please add £5 per person.
